Johannes Gehrke studierte von 1979 bis 1987 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In den seither vergangenen 30 Jahren hat er ein Lebenswerk geschaffen, das nie einer zeitgenössischen Strömung der Bildenden Kunst nahe kam. Operation Edelstein lautet der Titel des Werkkomplexes, an dem Johannes Gehrke seit 1986 kontinuierlich und ausschließlich arbeitet. In der Geschichte, erzählt in einer handgezeichneten Mappe mit 24 Einzelblättern und einem wachsenden Konvolut aus zumeist großen Skulpturen, leidet die Weltbevölkerung unter einer Plage: Ein Käfer, der mit dem Zweck, die Welt mit Glück zu überschütten, gezüchtet wurde, mutiert zum Gegenteil, vermehrt sich unkontrolliert und vernichtet Fantasie und Farben, wo immer er sie findet.
In den 80er Jahren von Gehrke als Zivilisationskritik erdacht, offenbart  Operation Edelstein heute die geradezu seherischen Fähigkeiten des Künstlers, der in seiner Erzählung technische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen vorwegnahm.

In the 30 years that have passed since then, he has created a life’s work that has never come close to any contemporary trend in the visual arts. Operation Edelstein is the title of the complex of works on which Johannes Gehrke has been working continuously and exclusively since 1986. In the story, told in a hand-drawn portfolio of 24 individual sheets and a growing conglomeration of mostly large sculptures, the world’s population suffers from a plague: a beetle bred with the purpose of showering the world with happiness mutates into the opposite, multiplying uncontrollably and destroying fantasy and color wherever it finds them.
Conceived by Gehrke in the 1980s as a critique of civilization, Operation Edelstein today reveals the almost seer-like abilities of the artist, who anticipated technical and social developments in his narrative.
